Are You Really Training Hard Enough?

Introduction

Not all workouts are created equal. You might be showing up consistently, but if the intensity isn’t there, progress will stall. So how do you know if you’re truly pushing hard enough?

Understanding Training Intensity

Training intensity refers to how hard your body is working during exercise. It can be measured using tools like heart rate zones, rate of perceived exertion (RPE), or weights lifted relative to your max.

Common Signs You’re Not Training Hard Enough

  • You never feel uncomfortable during sessions
  • You’re rarely sore or fatigued post-workout
  • You’ve hit a plateau in strength or endurance
  • You’re frequently distracted or chatting mid-session
  • Your heart rate stays in low to moderate zones throughout

Effort Markers to Watch

RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion): Aim for 7–9 out of 10 in key sessions

  • Breath and focus: Are you winded or coasting?
  • Time under tension: Are your sets challenging the last few reps?
  • Progressive overload: Are you gradually increasing weights, reps, or intensity?

Balancing Intensity with Recovery

Training hard is important but so is recovery. Incorporating reload weeks, rest days, and mobility work ensures that intensity leads to results rather than burnout.
